Premier League Match Preview: Sunderland vs. Southampton

Updated: January 15, 2014

Match Date: 18 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Stadium of Light

Obtaining landslide victories in three different competitions, Sunderland seem to not be having a difficult run in the English top-tier football. A 3-1 win over Carlisle United in the FA Cup, a 2-1 success over Manchester United in the League Cup, and a 1-4 victory over Fulham in the Premier League all contributed to a growing confidence for Sunderland. This is in spite of the side’s frustrations of not being able to get out of the relegation zone. They are currently at number 19, a one-spot improvement from last week.

At the Premier League, The Black Cats have only been able to win four times, force a draw five times, and lose their match 12 times. The unimpressive streak, however, has recently experienced a bit of revitalization, with new coach Gus Poyet sending his men to two victories and three stalemates in their past six top-tier matches.

Bagging back-to-back honors in the FA Cup and the Premier League, Southampton have proven themselves superior (at least on certain regards) of Burnley and West Bromwich.  The English top-tier club are currently in the table’s top half and may continue to remain so if they are able to maintain the same caliber they showed in their last two matches. Overall however, the Saints are far from being consistent. They may have won eight times this season, but that number is almost equal to their draws (6) and defeats (7).

Football betting tip: Both Sunderland and Southampton have had a good run in their past few fixtures, suggesting a bolstered determination to win their next battles. Considering this, a deadlock should be expected from their impending meeting.
