Venue: Petrovski Stadium

Team Form

Zenit St. Petersburg

Zenit St. Petersburg’s top brass, Luciano Spalletti stressed that the 4-1 thrashing from Austria Wien will hardly affect their performance when they meet Borussia Dortmund.

Despite the disappointing defeat, optimism remains at Spalletti’s camp. Although the squad’s head honcho admitted their disappointment over the said loss, he stressed that he remains satisfied with their overall performance in the competition.

The Sine-Belo-Golubye finished on the second spot of Group G, where they trail Atletico Madrid by six (6) points. They are tied with Lok Moscow in the Russian Premier League where they both share forty (4) points and are contending for the top spot in the domestic league.

Since the first leg of the upcoming match shall be performed in their own territory, the club may use their home court advantage to get the best result. They may also exploit Borussia Dortmund’s injury issues to gain the upper hand.

Borussia Dortmund

It remains unclear if Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender and Marco Reus will make it to Petrovski Stadium. The duo incurred injuries that may sideline them in the said match.

Reus and Bender’s injury seemed to have overshadowed the success they had against Werder Bremen. The club slapped their opponent with a convincing 5-1 victory to move closer to the current Bundesliga runner-up, Bayer Leverkusen. Bender suffered a thigh strain that may leave him out of the pitch for a week. Reus also complained the same injury.

Dortmund have been battling with injuries this season and these have caused them to drop in their Bundesliga rank. Other than Bender and Reus, Mats Hummels, Neven Subotic and Jakub Blaszczykowski were already sidelined due to health concerns.

Borussia Dortmund slipped to the third spot of the Bundesliga table. They trail Bayer Leverkusen by four (4) points and look forward to go back to their winning ways.

Meanwhile, in the Champions League, Dortmund have managed to survive the so-called “group of death” and even finished on the top spot. This was against other strong contenders such as Arsenal, Napoli and Marseille.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund

It will not be easy for Jurgen Klopp and his men. But their experience will definitely help them dominate the match against their Russian opponent.
