UEFA Champions League champions Real Madrid and UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla will vie for the Super Cup title on August 12. While neither of them was able to bag the La Liga trophy, both clubs have been very successful in their own rights last season.

Real Madrid

Los Blancos had a real chance at winning the Spanish top-tier league except that they failed to do so and slipped two places below the table’s summit. They were atop the table for four consecutive weeks but were later overtaken by Barcelona and the eventual champions, Atletico Madrid. They scored 27 wins from 38 appearances and were beaten by Barca for the second spot only by goal difference.

Outside La Liga, Carlo Ancelotti’s men were massively successful in other competitions. They were winners at the Copa del Rey after beating Barcelona in the final round 2-1. At the UEFA Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo netted the competition’s best goal-scoring record ever and went on to win the entire tilt (alongside his teammates, of course) following their rout of city rivals Atletico.

Sevilla

Except in the Europa League, Sevilla were not clearly considered as top dogs for any competition. They finished fifth in La Liga but were seven points behind their nearest rivals. In the Copa del Rey, they failed to advance through the Round of 16, having been beaten by Racing Santander in the Round of 32 on aggregate score.

Generally considered a strong team throughout their campaign, Los Rojiblancos were very consistent in UEFA’s second-tier tournament. At the group stage, they dominated their cluster with three wins and three draws. They would then proceed with higher battles by winning the rest of their fixtures. At the final, they trounced Portuguese side Benfica on penalties.

Football betting tip: The past four meetings between Real Madrid and Sevilla produced two victories for each of the two sides. However, Real Madrid would win in terms of goal difference. In this battle, Los Blancos will emerge as champions.
