Updated: September 12, 2013

Despite injury issues, Schalke has the experience to thrive and survive a close encounter with Steaua Bucuresti. Due to this, it is not surprising to see them picked as sports betting site favorite.

Schalke is another familiar face in the Champions League. Their return can be attributed to their impressive performance in the domestic league as well as their memorable finish in the UCL tournament last season.
During the 2012/13 competition, Schalke trounced P.A.O.K in the playoffs. Grouped with Arsenal, the Royal Blues awed many when they occupied the group’s top spot and left the Gunners trailing behind by 2 points.

As the Schalke advanced into the round of 16, the Royal Blues found themselves crumbling into the hands of Galatasaray. The latter’s edge in aggregate scoring ended Schalke’s UCL campaign.

Steaua Bucuresti

Steaua Bucuresti will try to extend its success in the domestic league to the international arena. Although tagged as minnows in the group, the club has had its dose of Champions League experience to help them survive the competition.

For the benefit of those who do not know, Steaua Bucuresti UCL appearance is not the first for the club. However, it has been a long time since they once made a buzz in the said event. To note, Steaua Bucuresti was one of the competing teams in the 2008/09 UCL.

The verdict: Schalke to win matchday one

Lately, Schalke are experiencing troubles in Bundeslig. Yet, despite their dilemma, the club is aggressive enough to make an impression in the UCL.

Powered by a young and dynamic squad, the match against Steaua Bucuresti is a giveaway for the club. It cannot be denied that it is one of the few squads that snatched a great deal during the summer transfer—acquiring high caliber player such as Kein Prince Boateng, Adam Szalai etc.

On the other hand, youngsters also fuel the Steaua Bucuresti  flank. However, their overt inexperience in the said  competition may lead to their early exit. Should they want to take the advantage from Schalke, they can capitalize with the latter’s injury issues. Klass-Jan Huntelaar, for one may be sidelined after hurting himself during the Wolsfburg match. But then again, this will barely guarantee that the club will survive throughout the tournament.
