UEFA Champions League Preview : Marseille vs. Arsenal

Updated: September 12, 2013

Once again, Arsenal and Marseille meet to determine which of them should continue in the Champions League tournament. With both clubs trying to have their revenge against each other, football betting tips foresee a draw between the two.

A 10th place finish last 2011/ 12 prevented Marseille from entering the 2012/13 Champions League tournament. Much to the disappointment of many, the French club was found missing in action while the rest of the toughest European clubs compete for the most sought after silverware. But now that they are back, the biggest question that the club faces is its ability to stay throughout the competition.

Pitted against Arsenal, Champions League runner-up, Borussia Dortmund and league rival, Napoli, Marseille belongs to one of the toughest groups in the competition, where they take the underdog’s role.

Prior to their absence in 2012/13, Marseille made it to the quarterfinals where they faced Bayern Munchen’s fury. Despite their strong campaign, the Bavarians stole the spotlight when they dominated the 2-legged encounter.

Apparently, the upcoming tournament is Marseille’s way of redeeming their seemingly fading glory in the international arena. With Florian Thauvin under its wings, Marseille brings a stellar goal scorer that makes the match more interesting than expected.

Arsenal displayed one of the most memorable matches in the Champions League history last season. Rallying behind their quarterfinal rival, Bayern Munchen, the Gunners needed at least 3 goals to bridge the aggregate scoring gap and indeed, they scored. They kept a clean sheet against the Bavarians. However, the visitors can only afford 2 goals and therefore, ended their stint in the tournament.

But perhaps, Arsenal can have a breather now. Drawn into the same group, the current scenario is a repetition of the happenings last 2012/13. Competing against the very same clubs that they overcame (except for Olympiakos), the club looks forward to extending their stay in the tournament. With Mesut Özil joining the flank, expect Arsenal to be one of the strongest forces to reckon with.

The verdict: A draw

Expect both clubs to veer away from the Champions League spells that prevented their survival. As for Arsenal, the squad is resolute on scoring more goals and avoid the aggregate scoring dilemma that knocked them down before. Its acquisition of Mesut Özil proves the clubs determination to strengthen its flank.

Meanwhile, Marseille will most likely take the opportunity to avenge themselves in the match. During their last appearance in the Champions League, it was Arsenal, which demolished their campaign in the tournament.

In occasions where both clubs are dying to secure their first matchday one victory, there is the possibility for the match to end in a nerve-cracking draw.
