Serie A Preview: Sassuolo vs. Cagliari

Updated: August 28, 2014

Match Date: 31 August 2014 (local time)

Venue: Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore, Reggio Emilia

Sassuolo flirted in the relegation zone last season and almost bid Serie A goodbye. However, the squad defied all expectations and managed to finish a notch above the dreaded zone. Do they still have the strength to survive this season? Or will they surprise the league with a better playing style and stronger finish?

The contenders

As mentioned, the Neroverdis almost failed to retain their Serie A status. But the return of Eusebio di Francesco, gave the club the grit that they needed. It can be remembered that Di Francesco was sacked and temporarily replaced by Alberto Malesani. However, it is evident that his exit was a short-lived on and it is through his tutelage that the club was able to survive.

Although Sassuolo finished at the bottom, it cannot be denied that the squad overflows with talent and potential. The likes of Domenic Berardi and Nicola Sansone attracted offers from different clubs, but the tow opted to remain within Sassuolo’s camp.

Cagliari fared better than Sassuolo last season. The former was two (2) notches ahead of their upcoming opponent and it is less likely for them to wave the white towel easily.

In the transfer market, Cagliari is one of the squads, which invested on young and talented players. The move can be perceived as an attempt to develop homegrown prodigies that will generate more success in the future and if this is the case, it looks like Cagliari will be one of the clubs to beat this season.

Possible head turners

Berardi and Sasone are vital cogs to Sassuolo’s attempt to climb the Serie A table. As for Cagliari’s side, apparently, the spotlight shall be turned to its promising signings such as Lorenzo Crisetig, Simeone Benedetti and Samuele Longo.

What the odds say

Sassuolo stands as the match’s online betting favorite, with odds valued at a profitable, 2.31.
