Manuel Pellegrini did the impossible when he helped Manchester City clinch the Premier League trophy during his first managerial year. Currently, his biggest challenge is to defend the title and his mission starts when City meets Newcastle United.

The contenders

Newcastle United

Newcastle United has readily showed improvement last season. From a squad that was struggling with relegation threats in 2012/2013, the Magpies were able to raise the bar higher when they entered the Premier League’s top 10.

Much of the pressure that Newcastle currently faces is how they can deliver a better finish. Certainly, many of its supporters expect to see more, most especially with what they have shown last season. Their recent signings present potential. But taking advantage of them in an attempt to climb the Premier League ladder heavily lies on Alan Pardew’s shoulder.

Manchester City

Down and almost out of the title race, Pellegrini made a bold statement. Expressing his utmost confidence in his squad, he stressed that other title contenders such as Liverpool and Chelsea will experience a major slip and they would be crowned as Premier League’s king. And City was indeed, hailed as the best club in England’s top-flight league.

One cannot doubt City’s strength in this tournament. However, the biggest question is whether they have enough strength to pull it off until the last match. City’s title rivals made major signings this season and they threaten to steal the limelight from the defending champion.

If winning a title during his first year was difficult, Pellegrini should expect the worst this season. It turns out that winning back-to-back championships is more difficult than winning it for the first time.

Prediction, head turners and flops

AS Monaco’s former striker, Emmanuel Riviere is expected to step up for Newcastle United. Scoring a victory against City will not be easy for the Magpies. This is most especially true if there is a great Yaya Toure whom they must contain and restrain. In this aspect, World Cup stunner, Tim Krul is expected to do the work in keeping the striker out of the scoring list.

As for City, many are expecting to see the added boost that Frank Lampard will give to the club. The former Chelsea man joined the online betting favorite for a season-long loan.
