Premier League Preview: Chelsea vs. Leicester City

Updated: August 19, 2014

Match Date: 23 August 2014 (local time)

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Leicester City was the only newly-promoted squad this season, which avoided the pitfall of defeat during the opening. The club slapped spoils against the veteran Everton when it successfully forced an even steven finish. Can these Foxes continue to impress? Well, it has too.

Chelsea is their next opponent and with the match scheduled in Stamford Bridge, the Blues will definitely use their advantage to snatch another three (3) points.

The contenders

Chelsea’s newly-acquired striker, Diego Costa showed his true worth when he spearheaded the club’s scoring attack. The former Atletico Madrid poacher responded immediately when Burnley’s Scott Arfield took the early lead. Several minutes after Costa scored, Andre Schurrle and Branislav Ivanovic also joined in the scoring spree.

But the squad’s known scorers were not the only ones that featured during the match. Cesc Fabregas, who is also one of the debutants, was spectacular. Clearly, he was the man who engineered Costa and Schurrle’s scoring opportunities.

This early, the Blues are already making a strong statement. After a disappointing performance in the title race, it looks like Mourinho and his men have no intentions of settling as the league’s runner-up this season.

Leicester City

Although the draw against Everton was expected, nobody thought that it will take place during the opening of the season. Well, perhaps, this has something to do with Leicester City’s status in the Premier League. Despite dominating the Championship, they are still considered as rookies in the top-flight league and so forcing an even steven finish against a more promising Everton was rather shocking. What was even more surprising was the manner in which the draw took place.

Two (2) minutes before the final whistle was heard, a determined Chris Wood scored the equalizer, much to the disappointment of a confident Toffees.

Possible head turners

Other than Costa, Didier Drogba is one of the high-profiled players that joined the squad. He entered late in the match against Burnley. But knowing how prolific Drogba is, one will not have to wait for so long to see this striker score and explode in the pitch.

What the odds say

It does not take a genius to see that Chelsea stands as the heavy favorite of online bookies. In 12BET, for example, the squad is valued to win at 1.21, whilst the betting odds given to Leicester are pegged at 12.39.
