Portuguese Super Cup Preview: Porto vs. Vitória Guimarães

Updated: August 8, 2013
FC Porto

It is plausible that Porto’s massive win over Vitória Guimarães earlier this year will be repeated in their upcoming Super Cup match this August 11. A 4-0 victory is indicative of the winners’ power to pound their opponents in the slightest amount of sweat and a strong determinant that they can handily dominate any football betting. However, Vitória’s seemingly underdog stature might go somewhere that is to their advantage, capitalizing on more drills and innovative tactics that may improve their form by several calibers stronger.
Rui Vitória’s men have successfully toppled four teams out of the five latest matches they engaged in, with a lonesome draw completing the table. Paços de Ferreira succumbed to the side’s power, earning them zero goals as opposed to Vitória’s two. Saint-Étienne, Desportivo Aves, and Benfica similarly left the pitch nearly empty handed. The duel with Arouca was the only draw in the record 0-0.
However, Porto is a huge challenge to confront. Vitória’s impressive wins lately can be matched—if not be surpassed—by Paulo Fonseca’s men’s constellation of triumphs. Their last five matches were nearly a complete landslide win if not for a loss against Galatasaray 1-0. But outside that, the matches have been stellar. The side’s tourney against Deportivo Anzoátegui yielded a 4-2 score while their match with Millonarious and Celta de Vigo posted a 0-4 and 0-1 final tally, correspondingly. Their most recent match, the one against Napoli, gave them a two-point lead against the Italian opponents 3-1.
Since five match dates ago, Porto have consistently been winning over Vitória, usually with scores of wide margins (4-0, 4-0, 3-1, 1-0, 2-1). This means that the Portistas may be inferred as the stronger side between the two, and that the Vimaranenses is faced with an uphill battle to fill the high-volume pressure. They should keep up with the pace a little better if they want to make any surprises in the match.
