LONDON – Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova edged out German rival Sabine Lisicki to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games women’s singles tennis quarterfinals.

Lisicki was Sharapova’s rival in her failed bid to top 2012 Wimbledon held a month ago. The German thwarted her out of the competition, failing to regain the world number one spot.

Initially, Sharapova seemed destined to repeat her Wimbledon run against Lisicki, until she reversed her rival’s fortunes and scored 6-7 (8/10) 6-4 6-3 within a gruelling two hours and 47 minutes.

Sharapova was happy that she was able to step her game up, noting that she was upset when she lost to Lisicki during this year’s Wimbledon.

The Russian’s first opponent in the quarterfinals will be Kim Clijsters of Belgium. The Belgian qualified when she defeated Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-4.

Meanwhile, current world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will compete against Germany’s Angelique Kerber. The Belarusian prevailed over Russia’s Nadia Petrova 7-6 (8/6) 6-4.

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will play against Russian Maria Kirilenko. The Czech sent Italy’s Flavia Panetta out of the competition 6-3 6-0.

Vera Zvonareva, who was a bronze medalist in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, lost to USA’s Serena Williams 6-1 6-0. Williams will face Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who qualified by routing Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova.

USA’s Venus Williams crashed out of the women’s singles competition when she was beaten by Germany’s Angelique Kerber 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/5). Venus still has a chance to win her fourth gold in women’s doubles with her sister Serena.
