LONDON – The semi-finals round of the men’s volleyball event at the 2012 London Olympic Games are now set to push through. Bulgaria, Russia, Brazil and Italy will figure in a contest for medal slots in the final round.

In shocking fashion, Bulgaria flattened Germany in straight sets 3-0. Tsvetan Sokolov led the Bulgarian pack with 22 points, followed by Nikolay Nikolov and Todor Aleksiev with 11 points each.

Top German scorer Gyorgy Grozer, scoring 12, was the team to victory after an eight-time block by the opponents.

Bulgaria will figure in the semi-finals against Russia. The Russians demolished challengers Poland in a remarkable 3-0 triumph.

The Russian team, a gold medal favourite, performed a series of sharp serves, accurate ball reception and persistent hits, posting an easy seven-point lead against Poland in the first set. Maxim Mikhaylov’s 13 points and Dmitriy Muserskiy’s 12 dominated Russia’s scoreboard.

Poland’s Zbigniew Bartman was the scoring powerhouse of the Polish team during the match with 14 points. The squad’s relative inexperience caused their downfall before the Russian giants.

Italy secured qualification impressively over 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallists USA. The Americans were unsuccessful in their title defence when Italy proceeded to a straight-set win 3-0, including an intense 28-26 first set.

Cristian Savani gave a 19-point explosion for the Italian squad, which effectively exposed leaks on USA’s defence. American Clayton Stanley’s 16-point contribution unsuccessfully saved the team in their bid to defend their gold medal.

Brazil will be Italy’s opponent in the semi-finals. The Brazilians ended Argentina’s medal pursuit in the competition through a 3-0 beating.

Sergio Santos strengthened the Brazilian defence, while Murilo Endres, Sidnei Dos Santos, Jr. and Wallace de Souza aggregately scored 37 points to thwart the Argentinians.
