LONDON – The men’s football quarterfinal contenders in the 2012 London Olympic Games are now complete after yesterday’s conclusion of group stage matches.

Brazil had an impressive run over New Zealand as the football specialists scored 3-0. Two goals came from striker Leandro Damiao, both made during the first half. Sandro of Tottenham Hotspurs scored the third goal, ensuring victory over the scoreless New Zealanders.

A fourth goal would have been possible for Brazil had Neymar’s shot went through the opponents’ empty goal. The Brazilians will face off against Honduras in their first quarterfinals.

Great Britain’s Daniel Sturridge slotted the lone goal in the match against Uruguay. The British will compete against South Korea first in the quarterfinals.

Senegal’s striker Moussa Konate ensured his nation’s chances of inclusion to the final eight. The striker scored a goal against UAE, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. The team’s quarterfinal opponent will be Mexico, which in turn excelled over Switzerland.

Egypt eliminates Belarus 3-1 for a quarterfinals qualification. The Egyptians will face Japan in the quarterfinals.

Japan and Honduras both qualified even as both scored a goalless draw. South Korea joined the last eight amidst a draw against Gabon.

Despite being the initial favourite to win the gold medal, Spain crashed out of the competition after scoring a 0-0 draw against Morocco.
