LONDON – Swiss tennis sensation Roger Federer successfully broke through the quarterfinals stage of the 2012 London Olympic Games men’s singles tennis event by winning against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

Federer scored 7-5 6-3 against Istomin. The first parts of the match were not an easy one for him, as the Uzbek rallied and gained the opportunity to break the narrow 6-5 score led by the world number one. The Swiss smasher denied his opponent the chance to do so as he further widened his lead and went on to victory.

After the men’s singles match, Federer paired with doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka to compete in the second round of the men’s doubles event.

The two battled with seasoned Israeli duo Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. The faceoff resulted in a loss for the Swiss pair 1-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-3, which was very different from their gold medal partnership in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Speaking of disappointment for his men’s doubles loss, Federer expressed that he is generally in good spirits because of his breakthrough to the quarterfinals. He admitted that his match against the Israelis was a fast-paced one that gave no room for error.

With a satisfactory form in men’s singles, Federer will be facing tall player John Isner from the USA. The tall American secured his quarterfinals qualification after defeating Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic 7-5 7-6 (16/14).

Meanwhile, Serbian Novak Djokovic triumphed narrowly against Australian Lleyton Hewitt, scoring 4-6 7-5 6-1 inwhat was deemed as an excellent match. He is set to face French high-flier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.

Tsonga trounced Spain’s Feliciano Lopez 7-6 6-4. In the previous round, the Frenchman had a thrilling win against Canada’s Milos Raonic, winning 6-3 3-6 25-23.
