Match Preview: Bayer Leverkusen vs. Mainz 05

Updated: September 19, 2013

Football betting tipsBayer debuted in the Champions League with a disappointing defeat against Manchester United. It is expected that the said loss shall be the club’s inspiration to bagthe victory against an equally aggressive club, Mainz 05.

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer’s first match in the Champions League was hardly close to being spectacular. Sami Hyypiä, the so-called “experienced head” of Bayer and a green horn in the tournament surrendered to another Champions League first-timer, David Moyes of Manchester United.

The controversial Wayne Rooney scored the match’s first goal. However, Rolfes immediately scored a counter attack, which equalized the scores. Unfortunately for Bayer, Robin van Persie fired a shot on the 59th and Rooney sealed his second goal, which left the German outfit clamoring for yet another equalizer. The awaited shot came from Ömer Toprak. But it was after Luis Antonio Valencia scored Man U’s 3rd goal on the 79th.

Although Bayer’s defeat in the international arena left Hyypiä with a major headache, the club found its consolation in the domestic league where they are one of the top performers. They won 4 of their last 5 matches and the only defeat they suffered was a 2-0 encounter in Schalke’s favor.

Pitted against Mainz 05, expect the club to fight tooth and nail in order to secure their position in Bundesliga. The win can help them overcome last season’s treble winners, Bayern Munchen.

Mainz 05

Mainz 05 hopes to have a strong finish this season after almost falling into the relegation zone. The club had a good start, but they seem to crumble like a house of cards.

From 3 consecutive wins, the club is trying to recover from 2 consecutive losses. First, Hannover thrashed them with 4 goals and Schalke stole the spotlight when new recruit, Kevin Prince Boateng converted. Now that they are up against Bayer Leverkusen, it seems like the club is headed towards their next defeat.

The verdict: Bayer to win by a single goal

Expect the upcoming match to be a close one. Bayer and Mainz are known for their deadly maneuvers on the pitch and neither of them shall wave the white flag easily.

From their past performance alone, Bayer’s edge is evident, In one way or another, the defeat in Old Trafford serves as a wake-up call for the club. Definitely, the club will not want to struggle in the long run and avoid another disappointing loss.

Both the Champions League and Bundesliga are significant to the club’s performance. Should they want to avenge themselves in the next season’s international tournament, they should not let go of their Bundesliga campaign, Underperforming in the domestic league might also compromise their next Champions League appearance and it is less likely that they will forego the chance to redeem themselves during the next season.
