Match Preview: Ajaccio VS. AS Saint-Etienne (Ligue 1)

Updated: July 26, 2013

AS Saint-Etienne shall have the opportunity to prove that it is still, one of Ligue 1’s top clubs and Coupe De La Ligue titleholder when they meet Ajaccio on Stade Francois Coty this 11 August 2013.

Just recently, the next best striker of the league, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left ASSE to pursue his goals in the arms of Champions League’s runner-ups, Borussia Dortmund. Such move raised questions on how Cristophe Galtier’s  4-2-3-1 will fare on the pitch.

Indeed, it is a major concern. But only when the team faces PSG, Marseille or Nice. As for the Ajaccio encounter, this is no more than just a highlighted warm-up. If only L’Ours secured Del Piero’s signature, perhaps the match shall have more weight. Well—it does have its significance for ASSE’s side. But this is only in building a safety net in aggregate scoring.

So far, ASSE’s team form is still, intact. In its recent friendlies, it forced a 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg and clinched a 3-1 victory over Istres.

L’Ours is also performing well in their friendly matches. Against Clermont and Nimes, it secured a draw. In both occasions, it ended in 1-1. But  it scored a 3-1 win over CA Bastia. Nevertheless, the bigger issue is whether Ajaccio can show off the same intensity in the top-flight league.

Ajaccio was almost relegated due to last year’s lackluster performance. The match against ASSE meant more to them than their opponent. The club has no other option but to win.

Yet, as for ASSE’s side, this is one of the best chances for them to collect and accumulate points now that Aubameyang is no longer with the team.

The verdict: ASSE to win despite of Aubameyang’s absence
