FOOTBALL - FRENCH CHAMP - L1 - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS v SOCHAUX

Match Date: 10 August 2014 (local time)

Venue:  Stade de Gerland

Olympique Lyonnais almost made an automatic qualification in the Europa League last season, but they fell short by eight (8) points. It is because of this disappointing near miss that the club will more likely to be more aggressive in their match against Rennes.

But like Lyon, Rennes also breathes an air of discontent after finishing on the 12th spot last season. This discontent will serve as the squad’s motivation in clinching its first win this Sunday.

The contenders

Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon finished as the 5th best club in France last season. Ideally, this should bring more pride and satisfaction. However, considering the fact that they are close to playing in the Europa League raises a certain degree of disappointment, what-ifs and regret.

But behind the unfortunate scenario lies a silver lining. The recently concluded season witnessed the rise of Alexandre Lacazette who scored fifteen (15) goals for the club. Bafetimbi Gomis also impressed with fourteen (14) goals and the likes of Jimmy Briand, Clement Grenier, Yoann Gourcuff and Henri Bedimo delivered crucial assists.

At the end of the day, it was still a fruitful season and if hang-ups from the near miss are still felt, the only solution is to seal a victory in the upcoming match.

Stade Rennais FC

Rennes landed on the 12th spot of the table last season. Though this is just a one-notch improvement, the performance is simply better than the last.

Rennes may not be the top pick of football betting tips in the match against Lyon, but it is capable of pulling off a stunner.  Both Rennes and Lyon share an equal number of wins and losses during their last six (6) matches. The idea of Rennes forcing Lyon to a draw is highly possible.

Possible head turners and what to expect

Rennes might take advantage on Bafetimbi Gomis’ exit in the club. Since Briand is also linked to a move in the Premier League, the visitors might also use this opportunity to snatch its first win.

However, Rennes cannot relax too much as Lyon will always strike without notice.

What the odds say

Lyon is the automatic favorite of sports betting site, 12BET. The former is valued to win at 1.84 while handing out an Asian handicap of 0 – 0.5.
