Ligue 1 Preview: Montpellier vs. Bordeaux

Updated: August 5, 2014

Match Date: 09 August 2014 (local time)

Venue:  Stade de la Mosson

Montpellier will try to have a strong start this season after a disappointing finish at the rock bottom part of Ligue 1’s table. It dropped to the 15th spot, six (6) notches lower than what it previously accomplished.

As for Bordeaux, the club sees the match as an opportunity to improve. The team has been stuck to the 7th spot for two (2) consecutive seasons now and this could be the chance to at aim higher and even qualify for the Europa League.

The contenders

Inconsistency characterized Montpellier’s performance last season. The instability that the squad experienced prevented them from climbing the table higher. They even needed to fight for their survival, a scenario that is quite unlikely from a squad, which was once hailed as king of French football.

Just recently, the club engaged into friendlies to prepare for the new season. It has  managed to clinch a victory against Difaa El Jadida, but was forced to settle for a draw against  Toulouse.

Bordeaux has the same fate as that of Montpellier except that it performed better. It landed on the 7th spot again and was close to sealing an automatic qualification in the Europa League.

Bordeaux has also participated in friendlies to serve as its warm-up this season. So far, it was able to snatch two (2) stalemates—one against Club Burges and the other with Nantes. Nevertheless, they dominated the friendly against Perugia where they scored three (3) goals against Perugia’s one (1).

Possible head turners and what to expect

Montpellier will be missing the services of Remy Cabella as the latter decided to join Newcastle United. Such is a great challenge to the squad’s scoring department and they must find the perfect replacement immediately. Montpellier is also free from any injury-related issue.

Meanwhile, Cheick Diabaté is expected to feature for Bordeaux and like Montpellier, the whole squad is perfectly fit for the upcoming match.
