Ligue 1 Preview: Evian Thonon Gaillard vs. Paris Saint Germain (PSG)

Updated: August 20, 2014

Match Date: 22 August 2014 (local time)

Venue: Parc des Sports, Annecy

Evian is in dire need of a victory after experiencing another major loss last weekend. The defeat pushed them at the rock bottom part of the table, which made them a heavy favorite to enter the relegation zone. With their next match pitted against the defending champion, Paris Saint Germain (PSG), it seems that Evian will have to wait before they can have their first 3 points in the season.

The contenders

Evian Thonon Gaillard

First it was the newly-promoted Caen and just recently, it was Rennes. The previously mentioned squads were all guilty of lambasting Evian in the pitch. But between the two, it was Rennes which got the lion’s share. The latter scored 6 massive points, whilst Evian responded with 2 goals, thanks to Daniel Wass’ efforts.
Apparently, the club suffers from a chronic defence problem, which needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Evian needs to avoid another loss and should capitalize on the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva. Both players are in doubt of making it in the said match due to injuries.

Yet, the bigger question is whether the absence of the said players was enough to bring PSG down.

Paris Saint Germain

After a draw with Reims, PSG immediately got back to its feet and clinched a victory against Bastia. But despite the victory, the encounter did not end as smoothly as expected.

An irate Brandao broke Thiago Motta’s nose after the match and as mentioned, Ibrahimovic was injured.

Nevertheless, although these players are sidelined, this could hardly cause worries for Laurent Blanc. The presence of Edinson Cavani is more than enough to appease the hardworking manager. Cavani scored the winning goal during the encounter against Bastia.

Possible head turners

The upcoming match is an opportunity for Cavani and Yohan Cabaye to feature in the club’s scoring list. The next battle is a great avenue for them to prove their million dollar worth in the team.

What the odds say

It does not take a genius to see that PSG is the clear favorite of online bookies. The defending champion is valued to win at profitable odds of 1.38 in 12BET.
