Real Madrid and Espanyol

Match Date: 17 May 2014 (local time)

Venue: Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid’s possibility of bagging the treble is already history. The mighty Los Blancos fell into Celta Vigo’s hands as the latter took advantage of Real Madrid’s errors. The match ended with the (minnow) scoring 2 goals, whilst the online betting favorite was kept at bay.

In an attempt to defend his side’s performance, Carlos Ancelotti stressed that the Champions League’s semi-finals took a toll on them and therefore dampened their (intensity) in the domestic league. This resulted to 2 consecutive draws and just recently, a loss against Celta Vigo. The manager added that the injuries incurred by his key players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Pepe have also contributed to the lackluster performance.  Isco also supported Ancelotti’s statement and emphasized the need for them to win the Champions League silverware and turn their focus to the match against Espanyol.

Real Madrid has already bagged the Copa del Rey trophy for this season. The club took the spotlight away from El Clasico rival, Barcelona. Prior to the said loss, the Los Blancos remained a strong title contender, not until Celta Vigo destroyed them last weekend.

In the meantime, Espanyol forced Osassuna to a stalemate during their recent encounter. Despite earning a point, this does not erase the fact that the club is trapped in a 6-match winless streak.

Espanyol may find it hard to win over a more determined Real Madrid. Nevertheless, since the season is already on its last leg, the club, which currently occupies the 12th spot has nothing to worry about relegation.
