EURO 2016 Preview: Denmark vs. Portugal

Updated: October 7, 2014

Match Date: 14 October 2014 (local time)

Venue: FC Copenhagen Stadium

The upcoming match is Portugal’s chance for redemption after suffering a humiliating loss at home during the qualifying opening. The said defeat has led to Paulo Bento’s resignation as squad manager.

Can Portugal meet the expectations? Or will they succumbed to another embarrassing loss?

The contenders

Denmark will readily exploit its home court advantage against Portugal to gain points and ensure its qualification.

Denmark managed to have a strong start in the qualifying round. Pitted against Armenia, it was able to clinch a narrow victory despite playing in a different territory.

Armenia initially took the lead. However, a determined Pierre Hojbjerg scored an equalizer during the 2nd half whilst Thomas Kahlenberg clinched the winning goal on the 79th.

Paulo Bento had to pay the price of resting Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal’s first qualifying match. The decision ended in a shocking loss to the group minnow, Albania and eventually, his resignation.

Bento will be replaced by the former manager of the Greek national football team, Fernando Santos, but the new head honcho shall not make it to the match since he is still serving an 8-game ban incurred from verbally abusing a referee during the World Cup.

Considering this aspect at hand, it seems that much of the responsibility of bringing victory to the team lies on its captain, Ronaldo.

Possible head turners

Bento’s decision to rest Ronaldo has something to do with the player’s injury. But with his impressive performance at La Liga, it seems that the stellar footballer’s injury is already a thing of the past. Indeed, this victory will most likely go to the online betting favorite, Portugal.
