Match Preview: PSV Eindhoven VS AC Milan
Match Date: 21 August 2013 (local time)
Venue: Philips Stadion

PSV Eindhoven (PSV) and AC Milan (Rossoneri) are off to another down the wire battle as both clubs clash to advance in UEFA Champions League group stage. The first leg of the 2-game encounter shall be held in PSV’s territory, Philips Stadion, where the player-turned coach, Philip Cocu plans to have its taste of revenge over the archrivals.

Meanwhile, the Rossoneri, fully aware of the impending PSV might, are not taking this matter lightly. Chosen as favorites not only by supporters, but also by online bookies, Massimiliano Allegri and the rest of the squad, refuse to throw in the white towel.

Reminiscing the past
PSV and Rossoneri have a long-standing rivalry that dates back to 2005. Despite scoring 2 goals in the 2nd leg of the semis and forcing an aggregate draw of 3-3, the victory, still, went to the Rossoneri’s side. The latter emerged triumphant by virtue of away goals.

Cocu learned his lesson well. Entering into the forthcoming match, the club brags a 5-0 aggregate edge, after thrashing the Belgian club, SV Zulte Waregem in the qualifying round.

Whilst the PSV has the aggregate advantage, the Rossoneris do not intend to go unprepared for the battle.

Except for the friendlies, AC Milan have not participated in any of the known competitive matches. Well, perhaps, the exposure of some players such as Mario Balotelli in the recently concluded, Confederations Cup, might help. But perhaps, what places them in a better position is the fact that they have enough rest. Filled with fresh legs willing to engage into classy tackles and strikes, the Rossoneris step up to the challenge and counter PSV’s momentum.

Players to watch out for
Mario Balotelli ,who was previously said to miss the face-off is back in the pitch. The injury he incurred from a friendly against LA Galaxy is already a history. Just when everybody thought that he is out in the tournament, Super Mario confirmed his presence in the anticipated face-off.

Super Mario is one of the club’s trusted and prominent figures. A definite force to reckon with and fulfill the absence of the injured Giampaolo Pazzini and unfit Robinho.

PSV, in the meantime, will be missing the contributions of its veteran stars. The summer transfer windows opened opportunities for Erik Pieters, Wilfred Bouma and Mark van Bommels, who will no longer wear their PSV suites.

Nevertheless, Cocu is banking on youngsters such as Zakaria Bakkali—the player who scored a hattrick against Belgium, Memphis Depay and Karim Rekik. There is no doubt that these green horns have the potential. But the bigger question is how far can their potential go against the Rossoneri’s experience?

The final say
The battle between PSV and AC Milan is indeed, a clash of Champions. Both teams have had their share of lifting the silverware—PSV in 1988 and AC Milan boasting 7 titles. Both have the potential to advance. However, given the experience and current form, it is evident that the Rossoneri shall have the final say.
