Match Date: 17 September 2014 (local time)

Venue: Stadio Olimpico

CSKA Moscow gets another chance for redemption in last year’s early Champions League. For the second time around, the squad is able to qualify and will have an exciting reunion with previous opponents such as Bayern Munchen and Manchester City. AS Roma is the only (newbie) in the group.

But while it is true that the Italian powerhouse has not seen much Champions League action, rest assured that they are not your typical push-over team. Rudi Garcia has been prolific in rebuilding the club and it is quite unlikely to see them wave the white flag easily.

The contenders

AS Roma

Roma’s unprecedented rise in Serie A last season is enough reason for them to generate fear among its opponents.

The club already featured during the Serie A kick off when they trampled the strong Fiorentina. Having the likes of Gervinho, whose stay in Arsenal exposed him to a tremendous Champions League action, may generate the experience that the team badly needs. Likewise, the strength of Roma’s midfield, which is comprised of Radja Nainggolan, Miralem Pjanic and Daniele De Rossi is one of their keys to success.

Italy’s capital club, however, will be missing the presence of Mehdi Benatia, who had just transferred to the German powerhouse, Bayern Munchen.

CSKA Moscow

The horses finished last in their group during their Champions League stint last season. The squad has only won once in all of its 6 matches alongside with Viktoria Plzen.

Since they have already met Bayern and Manchester City before, many are expecting some improvements when CSKA Moscow meets them again. But first they need to prove that they are the better team than the online betting favorite, AS Roma.

Possible head turners

Benatia’s unexpected transfer to Bayern created a loud noise in the footballing community. It will be good to see how Roma will cope and adjust with his absence.
