Updated: September 10, 2014
Sporting Lisbon

Match Date: 17 September 2014 (local time)

Venue: Stadion Ljudski vrt

It has been a while since Maribor snatched a trophy in the international arena. It bagged its first silverware when it snatched the Intertoto Cup in 2006. The said success was never repeated after the tournament’s abolition. Nevertheless, Maribor’s exploits in the European scene continued. It has been a familiar face in the Europa League until it defeated Celtic and secured its second appearance in the Champions League.
As Maribor continues its quest for European dominance, the squad must first dominate the match against another equally aggressive club and online betting favorite, Sporting Lisbon.

The contenders

The Purples is considered as one of the strongest and most successful clubs in Slovenia’s top-flight league. Yet, its current performance does not seem to fit such description as they struggle in the 5th spot of the Prva Liga table.

Although the club is a certified veteran in the Europa League, it is feared that the issues it confronts in the domestic league may consume their performance in the competition.

Sporting’s dilemma shares similarities with Maribor. Likewise, they have to deal with the ruckus of their domestic leagues performances. Nevertheless, Sporting boasts at least 2 trophies in the Europa League and these give them a slight advantage over their upcoming opponent.

But they cannot be too confident for Maribor is capable of facilitating an upset just like what it did to Celtic.

Possible head turners

Former Manchester United winger Nani will be one of the key figures that will appear in the said match. A familiar face in the Champions League, his presence is expected to add more depth and experience to Sporting.
