Venue: Stamford Bridge

Both Chelsea and Schalke 04 have their own Champions League issues to attend to this season. For these teams, this tournament opens another opportunity to feature and impress in a much bigger arena—it is an opportunity to collect footballing experience and of course, the chance to be called as Europe’s football king.

For Chelsea, this is the chance they need to compensate from failing to enter the final stage last season and as for Schalke, this is their way of seeking revenge after being battered by Real Madrid.

The contenders

Chelsea had a horrific Champions League experience last season. They were on their way to the final and the last thing they need to do is win against Atletico Madrid after the first leg of their play-offs ended in a scoreless stalemate.
The Blues had the advantage and was considered as favorite of sports betting sites since the last leg will be held in Stamford Bridge, but much to the amazement of many, it was Diego Simeone’s men who advanced when they hat-trick their way to success.
Such unexpected turn-around is something that the squad will try to avoid. They have been performing well in the domestic league and this should give them the confidence to face the Champions League challenge.

Schalke 04

Schalke suffered a brutal punishment from Real Madrid in their Champions League bid in the previous season.

In the play-offs, the Madridistas scored 6 goals, which automatically eliminated them in the Round of 16. Their second meeting saw some improvement in their performance. The second leg ended in 3-1 in favor of the Los Blancos. But the result could not do anything. The defeat in the first leg, as mentioned, has already ousted them from the competition.

Apparently, Schalke is determined to prevent such mishap from happening again.

Possible head turners

Diego Costa hardly featured in the Champions League last season because of incurring an injury. Rest assured that the beastly striker will dominate the score boards this season with a twist. This time around, he will be wearing Chelsea’s jersey instead of Atletico.
