Champions League Preview: Galatasaray vs. Borussia Dortmund

Updated: October 20, 2014

Match Date: 22 October 2014 (local time)

Venue: Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi

Sitting at the rock bottom part of Group D, Galatasaray attempts to change the course of its Champions League destiny via snatching a win against an unbeaten, yet uninspired Borussia Dortmund.

The contenders

A draw against Anderlecht and just recently, a thrashing from Arsenal, lowered Galatasaray’s chances of advancing into the next stage of the competition. However, they could make a huge turn if they snatch a win or at the very least, a draw against Borussia Dortmund.

Yet, on a closer look, it seems that Galatasaray’s winning possibilities are still slim considering the fact that they have a poor record against a German opposition. Its last victory, even if the match was played at home, occurred more than a decade ago.

Adding more problems to the squad is the absence of Blerim Dzemaili and Felipe Melo who are serving their match bans after receiving a booking.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund’s maintains a clean slate in the tournament. This is in stark contrast to their depressing performance in Bundesliga. Back in the domestic league, the squad, which has been the all-time favorite of sports betting sites,  has already hit the bottom part of the league table, which, if not immediately addressed, could affect their Champions League journey.

Ikay Gundogan, who has already recovered from a yearlong injury may appear in the clash against Galatasaray.

Possible head turner

Many are expecting another classic performance from Ciro Immobile. The former Torino striker snatched an equalizer to prevent a threatening clean sheet from FC Cologne.
