Champions League Preview: Chelsea vs. Maribor

Updated: October 20, 2014

Match Date: 21 October 2014 (local time)

Venue: Stamford Bridge

An injury-stricken Chelsea faces an aggressive Maribor in an attempt to extend its lead in Group G. The host will be missing some of its key players due to injury issues.

The contenders

Chelsea’s head honcho, Jose Mourinho divulged that its talismanic striker, Diego Costa will be sidelined during its clash against Maribor. He (Mourinho) added that he is unsure when Costa will return on the pitch to play for Chelsea.
Costa has been dealing with hamstring problems, which silenced him during the recently concluded, World Cup.  His condition was further aggravated when he played against Slovakia and Luxembourg.

Mourinho, of course, was unhappy with the situation.

Aside from Costa, Ramires and Andre Schurlle are also nursing an injury, which makes them doubtful in the upcoming match.

Prior to the Champions League encounter, Chelsea scored a win against Crystal Palace even without Costa’s presence. Mourinho will most likely stick to this line-up instead of making drastic changes to keep the balance in his squad.

Maribor is not wasting any chances to advance into the latter stage of the competition and the news of Costa’s injury is music to its ears.

The squad almost threatened Schalke with a humiliating defeat and there is a high possibility for them to show the same aggressiveness when they go against Chelsea.

Possible head turner

Marko Suler could readily make an impression for Maribor. As for the football betting favorite, Chelsea, they could always put their trust to the reliable Didier Drogba.
