Bundesliga Preview: Bayer Leverkusen vs. Borussia Dortmund

Updated: August 14, 2014

Match Date: 23 August 2014 (local time)

Venue: BayArena

The Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund encounter is considered as one of the biggest rivalries in Bundesliga. The squads impeccable team form were responsible for many of the league’s heart-stopping moments.

Bayer temporarily outshined Dortmund last season when a lackluster performance forced the latter to the 3rd spot. But a sudden turn of events witnessed the Borussians stole the show against and the sacking of Bayer’s Sami Hyppia.
With their upcoming match scheduled in BayArena, could this be the revenge that Bayer aspires for?

The contenders

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen has always been one of the strongest forces in Bundesliga and such fact became even more pronounced when they outranked Dortmund. Yet, as mentioned, Bayer’s strength was not enough to sustain such momentum until they almost fell out of the league’s top 5.

But it seemed that the stars continue to favor the squad as they have managed to recover and even secure a spot in the Champions League qualifiers this season. However, they might need to adjust since Emre Can is no longer staying in Bayer’s camp.

Despite the void that Can left, the squad remains intact with Stefan Kiessling leading the attack alongside with South Korea’s football prodigy, Heung-Min Son.

The club also did well in the transfer market with the acquisition of Josip Drmic and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Borussia Dortmund

For the second time around, Borussia Dortmund snatched the German Super Cup against Bayern Munich. The said victory generated a euphoric atmosphere at Signal Iduna and sent a strong message to its upcoming opponents.

But the Borussians must prove that their strength is not limited to celebrated friendlies. Currently, the club sports a strong team with the likes of Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, Ciro Immobile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, to name a few. On a critical perspective, the combination of these players is more than enough to compensate for the loss of its talismanic striker, Robert Lewandowski in the transfer market.

Possible head turners

Expectations are high on Immobile. This is most especially true in the scoring list. Serie A’s top scorer last season is expected to replicate such success in Bundesliga.

More improvements are also hoped for Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan.

From Bayer’s side, Drmic is deemed to add more grit to their attack.

What the odds say

A down the wire match is to be expected from two sports betting favorites. Yet, in this clash, Dortmund remains as the top pick and is valued to win at 1.74 whilst sharing a 0.5-1 Asian handicap.
