UEFA Champions League News: First Set of Round of 16 Qualifiers Confirmed

Real Madrid and AC Milan join the list of 13 out of 16 qualifiers for the next round of UEFA Champions League. French capital club Paris Saint-Germain finished on top of Group A. English champions Manchester City have exited from a dismaying loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Group A: PSG Top over Porto

Expensive Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain took the top spot in their group after beating Porto 2-1 at their home Parc-des-Princes stadium. Thiago Silva headed the opener before Jackson Martinez equalized. Ezequiel Lavezzi scored the winner beyond keeper Helton.

Dinamo Zagreb upset visitors Dynamo Kiev in a 1-1 draw amidst heavy snowfall. Andriy Yarmolenko scored by taking over a Denis Garmash assist before Ivan Krstanovic fired an upsetting equalizer on injury time.

Group B: Arsenal Settle For Second

Premier League outfit Arsenal failed in their bid to clinch top spot as they succumbed to Olympiakos’ challenge 2-1 in Athens. Tomas Rosicky fired the Gunners ahead shortly before half time. Giannis Maniatis and Kostas Mitroglou overtook their English opponents come second half.

Montpellier and Schalke end their fixture in a 1-1 draw. The French champions crashed out of the qualifiers as the German side held on to first place in the group.  Benedikt Howedes scored first for the Germans until Emanuel Herrera equalized three minutes later.

Group C: Malaga Seal First Place in Group

La Liga side Malaga went on with their Champions League campaign with a 2-2 home draw against Anderlecht. Duda scored a brace for the Spanish outfit. Milan Jovanovic and Dieumerci Mbokani equalized for the Belgian side.

AC Milan suffered defeat to Zenit St. Petersburg 1-0 at the San Siro. Danny scored the lone goal for the Russian side, enabling them to qualify for a Europa League spot. Milan finished second in the table with eight points.

Group D: Real Madrid Grab Qualifier

Spanish champions Real Madrid thrashed Ajax 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo played a pivotal role for his side, as he scored the opener and assisted Kaka’s goal. Homegrown Madrid striker Jose Maria Callejon proved his class by scoring a brace.

Manchester City failed to qualify for a Europa League slot after defeat to Borussia Dortmund 1-0. Julian Schlieber placed the German champions forward by converting a cross from Jakub Blaszczykowski.
