Villarreal almost secured a berth in the Europa League group stage had they been able to finish the season with five more points in their score sheet. Nevertheless, they were still qualified for the play-off round of the same tournament, having placed sixth in La Liga with a total score of 59 points and a goal difference if +16. They also reached the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey, eliminated from the competition by Real Sociedad on aggregate score.

A recurrent featured team in sports betting sites for La Liga, El Submarino Amarillo entered the season with three landslide victories: against Almeria 2-m away, versus Real Valladolid 2-1 at home, and opposite Osasuna 0-3 away. Their next three matches further extended their unbeaten streak, albeit finishing them only in draws.

For 16 consecutive weeks beginning in the curtain raiser, they were consistently ranked within the top five and at some points, made it through the top three. Their latter performances, however, were not strong enough to keep them in the elite ranks and they have ultimately fallen just outside the highest quadrant (which, to be fair, is still a very respectable place) by the season’s finish. They capped their campaign with two splendid victories against Rayo Vallecano 4-0 and Real Sociedad 1-2.

Nigerian international Ikechukwu Uche emerged as Villarreal’s top scorer for the last league season, netting 14 goals from 32 appearances. He was only one goal short of tying with Gareth Bale, Javi Guerra, Pedro, and Kevin Gameiro in the ninth spot of the league’s “top goal scorers” tally.  Other significant achievers from the side were Giovani dos Santos, Jérémy Perbet, and Bruno Soriano who netted 11, 10, and 6 league goals, respectively.
