Valencia were only one league spot away from securing berth in the Europa League Third qualifying round but a 10-point gap between them and the side (Real Sociedad) just above them was a clear demarcation line for the UEFA entry. The side’s campaign was generally lukewarm, not too weak to be disappointing but also not too strong to be impressive. They won 13 times throughout the competition and were the only side in the table’s top eight to post a negative goal difference.

Los Che signed 11 new players (some were promoted) during the summer transfer window and one during the winter transfer window to improve their rating amongst La Liga supporters and online bookies. Monterrey’s Dorlan Pabon received the highest transfer fee of €7.5 million, followed by Zaragoza’s Helder Postiga at €3 million. Other signings included Javi Fuego, Oriol Romeu, and Michel. Meanwhile, nine players left the club before the season began. Roberto Soldado was bought by Tottenham for an amount reported to be €30 million while Tino Costa was purchased by Spartak Moscow for €7 million. Other notable exits were Nelson Valdez, Aly Cissokho, and Salva Ruiz.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men opened their campaign with a clean sheet win over Malaga. However, the success seemed short-lived as it was trailed by three successive defeats from Espanyol, Barcelona, and Real Betis. Their inconsistency progressed further as they again obtained three victories in their subsequent matches only to be broken by a draw and another triplet of downfalls. They were unbeaten for six weeks in a row from 17 January 2014 through 25 February 2014. They sealed their 2013-14 season with a win against Celta Vigo 2-1.

In the Copa del Rey, Valencia only managed to rake a spot in the Round of 32 while in the Europa League, they reached the semi-finals. For the entire season, Jonas was the team’s best scoring player who netted 10 goals overall. His most impressive maneuvers would be the eight-minute hat-trick he produced in their brawl against Osasuna on 02 December 2013 at the Stadio de Mestalla where they also won 3-0.
