Recap

After clinching the Spanish Super Cup title, a seemingly tired Atletico Madrid graced the opening of Primera Division. The defending champion was off to a slow start as it was forced to settle for an even steven finish and without their beloved head honcho, Diego Simeone.

Meanwhile, Atletico’s stalemate with Rayo meant good news for other title contenders, which rallied for a strong start.

Barcelona grabbed three (3) points and so was Real Madrid. Indeed, expect another nerve wracking season in La Liga.

Scene-stealers

As usual, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi stole the spotlight during the league’s first week. Scoring two (2) goals, the talismanic striker led his team to victory against Elche.

The unbeatable duo of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo also fueled Real Madrid’s success over the newly-promoted Cordoba. The Los Blancos nailed 2 goals despite Cordoba’s resilience.
Speaking of Cordoba, the squad has nothing to be ashamed of despite losing the match against a strong Real Madrid, which could have easily thrashed them with more than 2 goals.

The blunders

A stalemate against Rayo Vallecano was the very least thing that could happen to online betting favorite, Atletico Madrid. It only gave its title rivals (Barcelona and Real Madrid) the chance to steal the spotlight away from them.

Making matters even worse was the Simeone’s 8-match ban, which he incurred during the last leg of the Spanish Super Cup.

What to expect

Once again, Atletico Madrid’s title defence shall be tested on the second week. Simeone’s absence will not make things easier fort Atletico, but considering the fact that they are the last season’s champion, they should be able to feature and collect the much needed points.
