Their last meeting projected a thrilling clash that ultimately ended in a draw 1-1. For their first tourney this season, Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo will both have to make better displays if they wish to rise above the other. The match will be held on September 17 at the soon-to-be-opened San Mamés stadium, Bilbao’s new home court.

Thus far, Athletic Bilbao are making noticeable improvements this season over the last term. They opened their new La Liga crusade with blissful back-to-back wins at Real Valladolid 2-1 and Osasuna 2-0. But this was later contradicted by a loss from Real Madrid 1-3 on an away match. With top-notch goalkeeper Iraizoz still not free from injury and Ander Herrera at a bidding war between his current side and Manchester United, there is a potential for Ernesto Valverde’s men to lose a bit of their traction. But this can be carefully prevented if the reassignment of players will be proper enough. The side are currently placed in the fifth spot of the table, a seven-bar improvement from last season’s overall placement.

Celta Viga started off in La Liga a little shaky, although they were nevertheless able to pull off some wits and finished their season debut in a reasonable draw with Espanyol 2-2. What surprised most audiences and online betting sites alike was Luis Enrique’s players’ success over Real Betis 2-1 in an away match, but that was not without any damage after captain Borja Oubiña was sent off and prevented him from playing in his side’s subsequent matches. This probably took a toll on them when they failed to pound succeeding opponents, Granada, to a loss. In addition to Oubiña, two other players—Samuel Llorca and Mario Bermejo—will have to sit on the sidelines due to injury. The squad are currently lurking on the 15th bar of the rankings.

Prediction: When it comes to possession, Celta are inferior to Bilbao, but they are highly effective in terms of making the most of their opportunities. Bilbao may not produce daunting scores in this match with Celta, but they are still plugged to win the clash in a narrow goal difference.
