Villarreal

Although they lost their match just before winter break, Villarreal were otherwise very successful in kicking off 2014. A massive away win over Rayo Vallecano ensured that they are still part of the top six.  The win was their third away victory this season, and ninth overall. Bagging 31 points from all their fixtures and scoring a total of 32 goals, El Submarino Amarillo remain to be among La Liga’s strongest contenders.

Villarreal’s win over Rayo was one of their best finishes this season, creating goals five times and conceding only two. They were instantly the dominant side even only in the match’s first 10 minutes, after Ikechukwu Uche opened the scoring within that period. This was followed by two goals from Jeremy Perbet and then another couple from Uche, thus awarding him a hat-trick. In the 66th minute, Rayo’s Nery Castillo scored the first goal for his team and a second one (and the match’s last) in extra time.

Real Sociedad

Ending 2013 with a victory over Granada 1-3 and dominating the Basque derby at the start of 2014, Real Sociedad could not be any happier. The top five club now have nine new season victories under their belt, moderated only by five draws and four defeats. While a third La Liga win is still a long shot (as the current top two squads are 17 points above them and are likely to continue a successful run), Jagoba Arrasate is optimistic that his men would at least conclude the season qualifying for the Champions League or the Europa League.

Online betting tip: Only one point separates Villarreal from Real Sociedad in the league rankings, but are equal on score in terms of goal difference. Their past two matches held both sides in a draw, and in this upcoming meeting, the same result could still happen.
