Match Date: 22 December 2013 (local)

Match Venue: Mestalla

Valencia’s loss to Atletico Madrid meant that the latter are now level on points with table leaders, Barcelona. Los Che failed to score at least one goal in the match, and instead conceded three. Diego Costa struck the opening goal in the 59th minute, and then Raul Garcia doubled the lead just moments after coming onto the pitch. Costa missed a penalty and then scored his second attempt from the spot to round off a victory. The side were initially having a hard time in the match’s first period, mainly because Valencia were preventing them from scoring on a magnificent defensive approach.

Miroslav Djukic’s lads produced a robust defensive display for the opening hour, but at the time when they started losing their traction, retaliation was no longer an option. Diego Simeone’s side, in comparison, craved for an attacking spectacle—and they ended up getting all the scores. Current rankings place Valencia at number nine, after securing 20 points from 16 matches.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s most recent La Liga match almost embarrassed them with a near-defeat encounter from lowly Osasuna, but they strongly fought back and salvaged a 2-2 draw with their opponents.

Oriol Riera fired a goal twice for Osasuna in the first period and the latter’s win seemed even more certain when Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos was sent off for two offenses, reducing the team to 10 men.

However, Madrid breathed a life of hope when Isco netted a goal just seconds before half-time and a header by Pepe filled up the comeback on the 80th minute. At the time, Osasuna had also been reduced to 10 men, with Francisco Silva sacked for obtaining two yellow cards. Real Madrid are still in third place, six points short of claiming the top spot from Barcelona or the second spot from Atletico Madrid.

Football betting tip: The last six meetings between Valencia and Real Madrid rendered the latter victorious three times, while the former only scored on draws. In this upcoming fixture, another three points will be obtained by the visitors.
