La Liga Match Preview: Espanyol vs. Villarreal

Updated: February 19, 2014

Match Date: 24 February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Cornellà – El Prat

Espanyol’s home matches are marred by inconsistency, although their two most recent efforts yielded them deserved victories. They were highly successful in their brawl against Athletic Bilbao and the very first club to inflict a home defeat to Los Leones this season. Sergio Garcia and Diego Colotto struck spectacularly to ensure their side of earning a notable double, with Bilbao’s Gurpegi only scoring one equalizer. This was Espanyol’s second slamming of Bilbao this season, the first one being in September on a reverse arrangement. Thus far, the Periquitos have already earned 32 points from all their matches, placing them at number nine in the league table.

El Submarino Amarillo incurred back-to-back defeats in their past two league matches, succumbing to Real Madrid 4-2 and Celta Vigo 0-2. These left them with two sets of three-point deficits and prevented them from moving upwards in the standings, stuck at the fifth spot. With 12 wins and four draws under their belt, they are level with Real Sociedad on points but rank ahead of them via goal difference.

Despite their recent disasters, Villarreal remain among the strongest contenders in the competition—though not the obvious favorites to win. They keep a sprightly approach to shooting from direct free kicks and show depth in skills when it comes to creating chances using through balls.

Online betting tip: Espanyol and Villarreal could share the spoils in this face-off. The sides are only four spots away from each other and both had their respective milestones this season.
