La Liga Match Preview: Espanyol vs. Granada

Updated: February 6, 2014

Match Date: 08 February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Cornellà – El Prat

In an unexpected turn of events, Espanyol went below expectations as they were slammed by lowly Real Betis on a clean sheet. Ruben Castro sent his team to their first triumph since September with a late double strike. The side have looked doomed to the drop zone, having been stranded at the foot of the table while their winless stretch did not cease to cool down. But Castro’s impressive stunts produced a big surprise. For Espanyol, this marked their second straight defeat following their downfall from Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey which was held only a few days earlier.

Losing all the points in their latest battle, the Periquitos slid by one spot in the league table. They are still in the top half but they have been marooned to a negative goal difference for a few weeks now.

As an away side, Granada had a few promising triumphs; but at home, they have struggled with inconsistency, losing seven of their previous 11 league matches this season. The plight might have been turned around on Friday if Yacine Brahimi’s 19th-minute shot swooped in through the net instead of being tipped round the post by goalkeeper Yoel. They lost their match from Celta Vigo 2-1.

The Nazaries are only four points and four spots clear of the relegation zone, netting 20 goals in 22 matches and scoring total points of 24.

Football betting tip: Espanyol should look forward to a hard-earned but well-deserved victory at Granada. Scoring can be high, but the goal difference will be narrow.
