La Liga Match Preview: Elche vs. Málaga

Updated: December 16, 2013

Match Date: 20 December 2013 (local)

Match Venue: Martínez Valero

The last two La Liga weeks have so far been devastating for Elche, with both of their matches ending in upsets. They were beaten in a clean sheet by Atletico Madrid in their very own territory, and their travel to Valencia to meet up with Levante was similarly uninspiring. To date, they have obtained 17 points from 16 matches, of which 16 goals were scored and 22 were conceded.

While Elche’s defensive mechanism toward set pieces remains strong, they have considerably weakened in aerial duels, defending the lead, and have often fouled in dangerous areas. These shortcomings, along with other smaller issues, have perhaps contributed to the side’s lousy inconsistency this season.

On their outings to other stadiums, Malaga have never been able to earn three points in a single match. While they may have drawn for the majority of the occasions that they were out of their own turf, the club have incurred two away defeats that were otherwise festive for opponents like Real Madrid and Granada. The squad are currently positioned in the league table’s 13th spot, after earning 17 points from 16 matches.

Malaga remain poor at possession, with added burden on managing set pieces and an increasing number of errors by individual players. They are, however, very skilled at attacking down the wings. Perhaps, in their coming matches, they’d retain their style in taking longs shots. But a more innovative approach to the pitch should be developed in order to truly dominate their every battle.

Football betting tip: The sides are ranking side-by-side (but level on points) in the table’s third quartile, indicating a tight competition this fixture could potentially produce. Head-to-head, Malaga and Elche are also almost on the same footing, winning two fixtures each in the squads’ last for meetings together. In this match, a deadlock should therefore not come as a surprise.
