A much-needed set of points was obtained by Elche after they won over Malaga at La Rosaleda. The battle only required one goal for a winner to be produced, which was decisively converted by Garry Rodrigues for Los Franjiverdes 11 minutes into time.

Despite having the less strong performance in the earlier parts of the battle and with Botia being sent off to a red card, Elche still managed to earn all the marbles and headed home with a major boost to their La Liga survival. The side climbed one spot higher than their placement from last week, giving them new space within the top 15. One more win and their berth for next season is already certain.

A draw with Getafe was very unlikely for a powerhouse club like Barcelona, but the surprise result happened and Barca’s hope to defend their title was hit hard by their opponents. A stoppage-time effort by Angel Lafita proved decisive of the battle’s outcome, which he scored just behind an equalizer to Lionel Messi’s opener.

Barca would have tumbled into the third spot had Real Madrid won over Valencia on weekend. Fortunately for Gerardo Martino’s men, their title rivals earned only one point which kept them at bay. Barcelona remain in the second spot, but are now only three points away from leaders Atletico Madrid after the latter unexpectedly suffered a goalless defeat from mid-table side, Levante. The race for the overall championship, thus, is not yet over for the Catalans.

Sports betting tip: Barcelona are on course to securing their 28th win this season.
