Eibar were the champions of the Segunda Division last season, earning them a well-deserved promotion to the top-flight league. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, were one of the strongest top-flight contenders from last term (they ranked seventh by the tournament’s closing). In their two most recent matches (both on friendlies), the away side have so far been more successful, with clean sheets they earned from both occasions.

The Armeros’ first few weeks in the league were a roller coaster ride. They debuted at number three in their season opener but slid to the bottom half in the next nine weeks following an unimpressive streak of results. Soon after, they started picking up and have successfully barged again into the top three by week 20. They have reached the apex of the table in their 25th fixture and remained in that position for seven more weeks before dropping to the second by the 33rd week. But before the season ended, the side successfully reclaimed the top spot and held on to that glory before being declared as the tournament’s overall champions.

In the club friendlies following their second-tier league victory, the side obtained three consecutive wins (from Logrones, Barakaldo, and Racing Santander) but their streak soon deteriorated after suffering three non-consecutive defeats from Numancia, Alaves, and Real Sociedad. They, however, were able to seal their final friendly with a clean sheet triumph against Osasuna.

Finishing in the seventh spot, Real Sociedad were given automatic berth to the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League Third qualifying round. They were 10 points clear of the club (Valencia) next to them and were level on points with sixth placers Villarreal (they were overtaken in the ranking only via goal difference). In general, Txuriurdin had a good season, but not as strong as their previous campaign when they finished in the top four. Regardless, they had a few players who performed tremendously well in the competition. Carlos Vela and Antoine Griezmann, who each netted 16 goals throughout the process, were among the top scorers of season. The former also emerged as the club’s best assister (with 12 successful passes).

In their most recent club friendlies, however, Real Sociedad did not impress that much. They were rendered goalless in their matches against Newcastle United and Chelsea, but earned a clean sheet against Eibar.
