The last two matches (both in the last season of La Liga) between Almeria and Espanyol yielded four points for the former and only one point for the latter. However, earlier fixtures between them suggest that Espanyol are also capable of having the lion’s share of the points.

Rojiblancos were almost eliminated from the Spanish top-tier football last season, scoring 40 points and narrowly escaped the bottom three by emerging just one point clear of Osasuna, the eventual 18th placers. Apparently, the side went through a very difficult campaign. In 17 non-consecutive weeks, they were part of the table’s most dreaded spots; in fact, they landed at the rankings’ foot four times. By the end of the season, they incurred the third worst goal difference, suggesting a need for a total reinvention of their defense.

In their matches leading up to the new season, Francisco Rodríguez’s lads created some astonishing results. They were unbeaten in all of their pre-season friendlies (W3-D2-L0) which were obtained at the back of a successful closing from the previous season, when they attained points from each of their last four tourneys.

In spite of some issues in their defense, Espanyol still managed to end the season in the mid-table—even if it meant incurring a disappointing goal difference. The squad finished in 14th place with their form embroidered by 11 wins, nine draws, and 18 defeats. Among the players, Sergio Garcia was the side’s best player, scoring the most goals for the club as well as producing the most assists for his team-mates.

In their recent pre-season friendlies, Sergio González’s men were far from being impressive. They engaged in five non-competitive matches but only managed to win once. They were held by Raja Casablanca and Olot, and were beaten by Girona and Sabadell.

Online betting tip: Almeria will kick off their campaign positively, at the expense of Espanyol.
