Atletico Madrid

Match Date: 08 February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Juegos Mediterraneos

In their past five matches, Almeria succumbed to their rivals four times; only one of those fixtures allowed them to earn points. In their recent home records in the Spanish top-flight league, however, back-to-back victories were earned when they competed against Granada and Getafe. Their streak is nevertheless far from being perfect as seven of their other home fixtures were not as successful, including four tourneys that ended in downfalls.

Almeria are barely above the relegation zone, only two points clear of Real Valladolid. Going back to the bottom is not impossible if they are unable to strengthen their momentum. Improvements were already made, but the strength to hold on to those progresses is not yet enough.

Atletico Madrid

Unbeaten in the last 23 matches, Atletico Madrid have finally reached the summit of the table. Along with their 4-0 win over Real Sociedad was their return to the league’s top position for the very first time since 1996, overtaking perennial favorites Barcelona. In an apt way for the club to pay tribute to club legend Luis Aragones, who passed away a day earlier, David Villa scored the lead late in the first period and then dedicated his goal to the late coach, with whom he won Euro 2008 with Spain. Other players who contributed to the score were Diego Costa, Joao Miranda and substitute Diego Ribas.

If everything goes well, Los Colchoneros might just win this season. But they are currently only three points clear of Barca, which means that they have to continue striving hard in order to secure the lead.

Online betting tip: Facing a club who have already overtaken the former leaders, Almeria would need a miracle for them to defeat Atletico Madrid. Based on form alone, the visitors are the clear winners in this meeting.
