Atletico Madrid to welcome Mandzukic

Updated: July 9, 2014

The 2013-14 season was the most stunning term for Atletico Madrid in decades, following back-to-back accomplishments in La Liga (champions) and the Champions League (runner up). But with the massive success comes the massive drawback: their best players could be lured by other clubs who would want a major boost to their squads in order to gain attention from supporters and online bookies alike. This is what exactly happened with Diego Costa, the players extremely vital to the side’s triumph in both titles, having completed signing with English club Chelsea. But Atletico will not let go of a massive talent without making a wise replacement. Mario Mandzukic, one of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich’s best talents, is on his way to a €22-million deal with Los Colchoneros.

Although his career with Bayern has been more than satisfying, Mandzukic needed to leave the club in order to pursue other things and avoid deeper clash with coach Pep Guardiola. The striker and his manager have been engaged in a bust-up following their 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

“I met (Bayern chairman) Karl Heinz Rummenigge before the (German) cup final and told him I wanted to leave the club,” expressed the 28-year old Croatian. “I’ve had a fantastic time at Bayern. It’s a great club and I never thought I’d want to leave, and especially not at this point in time. But, let’s be honest, I cannot play to my strengths under Guardiola’s style—no matter how hard I try.”

Apart from Atletico, Mandzukic has also been linked to other top clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea. Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo also claimed that Juventus, Zenit St. Petersburg, and an unnamed Premier League club also tried to produce last-minute bids but failed.
