Liverpool were too close from achieving their very first Premier League title since the 1989-90 season, only to be trounced by two points by fellow online betting favorites Manchester City. Nevertheless, the side produced the top-scoring player of the past season—Luis Suarez—who also received the Premier League Golden Boot and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards. Team captain Steven Gerrard recorded the most assists with 13.

The race to the top of the 2013-14 season of the English top-tier league was one of the closest rivalries among the English clubs in recent history. The season closed with the top three clubs only separated by two points. The disparities were most pronounced on goal difference, with Manchester City still the leaders with 65 followed by Liverpool with 51, and Chelsea with 44.

As runners up in the league, The Reds were given automatic seeding in the Champions League. They secured this spot even before the season concluded following the 2-3 away win over Norwich City three fixtures before the finale. For many weeks, the club looked to be winning the entire rivalry but their defeat to Chelsea and the draw they held with the ever-resilient Crystal Palace badly hurt their championship campaign. They recorded their best win against Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal clean sheet on 15 December 2013 in London. They incurred goalless defeats three times, conceding a total of five goals to Southampton, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

Team coach Brendan Rodgers was one of the favorites to win the EPL Manager of the Season award but the accolade eventually went to Tony Pulis who did an outstanding job in turning the tides for underdogs-turned-dark horses Crystal Palace.

Liverpool reached the fifth round in the FA Cup and the third round in the League Cup. A total of 110 goals were scored during the entire season from all competitions, with Suarez netting more than a quarter of that number. However, the top playmaker has just left Rodgers’ side for the La Liga club Barcelona. He was also banned from appearing in any football match until October for the shoulder bite he inflicted on Italian player Giorgio Chiellini in the recently concluded World Cup.
