The Verdict: Costa Rica Determined To Reach CONCACAF’s Final

If not for Brek Shea’s 82nd minute goal, it could have been the penalty kicks that determined the winner of the match between Costa Rica and USA. Nevertheless, this does not change the truth that the Los Ticos is a great force to be reckoned with—and Honduras should be fully prepared. USA’s 1-0 upset highlighted Costa Rica’s strength on the pitch.

USA’s winning shot is the only goal conceded by Costa Rica since the beginning of the tournament. This therefore, speaks of the squad’s impenetrable defence. As seen in the previous match, breaking such defence wall requires tons of strategic maneuvers, creative attacks and a dose of Lady Luck’s blessings.

Patrick Pemberton has protected the goal well not only against his renowned nemesis, but to every potential threat to its CONCACAF’s campaign. There is no reason why he should not do the same to Honduras. As a matter of fact, one can expect an even tighter defence.

Meanwhile, in as much as Los Ticos has been very keen in preventing its opponents to put up a single goal, the squad never forgot its scoring duties.

In Group C of the qualifiers, Costa Rica finished on the 2nd spot, just three (3) points below the table leader, USA. They could have snatched the top spot, if not for the loss against the latter and a much better goal difference, if they have only come across Belize.

Costa Rica does not expect Honduras to throw the white towel easily. But neither do they want to do the same. There is more at stake in this match than one can ever imagine. First is the possibility of entering the final and most importantly, another bout against their World Cup qualifier rivals, USA.
