Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have already met twice in August alone, both for the Super Cup with the latter eventually winning the entire tilt. This derby will certainly be one of the most attended matches for this season.

Real Madrid

It is quite uncommon for the world’s wealthiest football club to lose in their fixture early into the season and barely make it to the top 10 of the rankings, but it was what exactly happened to Real Madrid when they fought against Real Sociedad for La Liga’s second week of battles. While they shunned a clean sheet upset, they failed to recoup (via equalizers, supposedly) the four goals they conceded to their opponents. Los Blanco’s recent form is one of their worst. Indeed, they only won twice in their nine latest matches, both clean sheets against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup 2-0 and against Cordoba in the Spanish top-flight league’s opening 2-0. They failed to earn points from their most recent friendly as well as from their International Champions Cup campaign last July.

Atlético Madrid

Although Atletico have been unbeaten in their last eight matches (winning five, including a Super Cup triumph), they have some serious squad exits that may prove detrimental to their title defense campaign. Star player Diego Costa is now with English side Chelsea (to whom he made positive contributions to their current EPL leadership) and David Villa, Thibaut Courtois, and Filipe Luis have also bidden farewell as well. Los Colchoneros, however, welcomed new and strong signings as replacements for the aforesaid players. Bayern’s Mario Mandžukić, Benfica’s Jan Oblak, and Granada’s Guilherme Siqueira all have high potential to be a top-notch striker, goalkeeper, and defender, respectively. As of week two, Diego Simeone’s lads lads rank sixth in the league table.

Sports betting tip: Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will each produce one point from this derby.
