Serie A Preview: Genoa won’t get past Fiorentina’s barricade

Updated: August 28, 2013

Serie A has just started, yet the heat in the tournament is astonishingly over the top. For contenders Fiorentina (Viola) and Genoa (I Rossoblu), the initiative to unveil friction won’t go long enough. The sides are set to launch a clash on September 2, where Genoa’s Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris will serve as the official match venue.

Fiorentina’s comfortable sixth-place standing in the current League table is a feat attributed to their win in their season debut. This should serve as a hint for supporters who bet online, as this might be indicative of the side’s potentially remarkable future. The side outperformed Catania 2-1 in a duel that saw Giuseppe Rossi return to his prime after a string of knee ligament injuries. The American-born Italian footballer slotted the ball past Catania’s Mariano Andujar in the 14th minute, his first goal since his physical peril. Pablo Barrientos delivered the equalizer for his side eight minutes later from close range. Viola midfileder David Pizarro, however, was able to seal the win for his squad after securing a goal in the 28th minute. None of the teams scored in the second half.

Genoa’s attempt to start their campaign positive was put to jeopardy after Inter Milan pounded them to defeat 0-2 in the season opener. Japan international Yuto Nagatomo opened the scoring from point-blank range in the 75th minute following a deflected cross from Inter’s Jonathan Moreira. Rodrigo Palacio doubled the lead in added time. The match was initially seen to be leading in a draw, but Inter was quick to send late goals just before the session ended. This marks I Rossoblu’s second defeat in a row, after being beaten on penalty by Spezia in the Coppa Italia.

Of the last five matches they had with Genoa, Fiorentina have emerged successful four times. The only occasion they did not win over their rivals was on a Serie A match that took place March last year. Even so, the tourney did favor Genoa as it was eventually decided in a draw. This time around, Fiorentina are certain to repeat their victory. Their opponents have shown lackluster routines in their most recent battles, and winning this one is just an apt coronation for the side’s efforts.
