Serie A Match Preview: Sampdoria vs. Udinese

Updated: January 8, 2014

Match Date: 13 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Comunale Luigi Ferraris

While they may have landed in the relegation zone several times, Sampdoria are not the typical underdogs that supporters could easily disregard. They are tough fighters and the spirit of resilience is all over their record. Now free from the deadly league abyss, i Blucerchiati have made themselves four points clear of demotion. They lost their battle to Napoli a few days ago, but their streak prior to that was very impressive—posting two victories in Serie A and bagging a massive win in the Coppa Italia.

The defeat Sampdoria incurred from Napoli 2-0 was quite expected, with the latter only needing one player to seal a good start for 2014. Dries Mertens struck twice in the battle, scoring his first in the 54th minute and delivering the second in the 62nd minute. This was Sinisa Mihajlovic’s first loss as Sampdoria’s new coach, but he envisions a much stronger display by his men in the fixtures to come.

Making a roller coaster ride in the Italian top-tier football is what Udinese might be known for this season. Their inconsistency fires on all cylinders, as evidenced by their placement in the bottom half and a W6-D2-L10 record. Their score pegged at 20 points may be substantial to keep them adrift of the relegation zone—which was their temporary home in several of the league’s match weeks—but their negative goal difference is otherwise upsetting. They have netted 18 goals all season long, but were made to concede 25.

Online betting tip: In a match where both sides are faced with scarcity in sizable spectacles, a stalemate is a plausible result. Sampdoria could make the better displays (as in making scoring chances) in the face-off, but they will likely be prevented by Udinese from converting any opportunity.
