Serie A Match Preview: Napoli vs. Chievo Verona

SSC Napoli v UC Sampdoria - Serie A

Match Date: 25 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Stadio San Paolo

Napoli are flaunting a clean record for their past nine fixtures (in all competitions). On top of bagging winning positions in the Italian top-flight league, the side also seized the silverware in the Champions League (versus Arsenal 2-0) and the Coppa Italia (versus Atalanta 3-1). Partenopei are currently in the top three of Serie A, after earning 43 points from 20 matches (W13-D4-L3). Their recent successes are a proof that they are very much eager to regain the top spot, which was their property in the tournament’s first three weeks.

In their latest top-tier match, Rafael Benítez’s players were held in a draw 2-2 by Bologna. Rolando Bianchi gave an upbeat Bologna side the lead just before half-time, but things drastically changed in the second period. Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon were brisk at attempting to thrash their hosts and successfully turned the match around with a 1-2 lead. However, it was Bianchi who had the final say shortly after Panagiotis Kone was handed with a red card, grabbing an equalizer in the tourney’s dying minutes.

Chievo Verona

Whether in Serie A or any other local competitions, Chievo are dribbling on the wrong path. Their past six matches only gave them two draws to get slight inspiration from, with the rest of the string going into rock bottom. In the top-tier football, the troupe are level on points (17) with relegation candidates Sassuolo, narrowly adrift of the bottom only by goal difference.

Gialloblu’s most recent Serie A fixture gave them their 11th defeat this season 1-2. They were thrashed by Parma on an injury-time goal by Alessandro Lucarelli, which comes behind a first half equalizer from Antoni Cassano. Chievo opened the scoring via Alberto Paloschi’s 15th minute goal and although goalkeeper Christian Puggioni had some successes saving some Bologna goals, he eventually succumbed to his side’s opponents.

Football betting tip: Chievo are not necessarily very poor in the pitch, but they will appear so when they are put next to superpowers like Napoli. In this match, and as obvious as it may seem, the home side are expected to pick up all the three points.
