Serie A Match Preview: Atalanta vs. Napoli

Updated: January 28, 2014

Match Date: 02 February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Atleti Azzurri d’Italia

Atalanta shipped their 11th defeat in the season from their fixture against Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on weekend. This gave them a deficit of three points but was nonetheless relatively insignificant as they still retained their position at the 12th spot. The loss was, however, a double murder for the side as it also produced them with zero goals to increase their conceded goals to 30. They currently have a goal difference of -9 and total points of 24.

Although they are generally strong at home, Atalanta have had some rough times in their own grounds. In the current season alone, they already succumbed to their visitors twice and held their opponents on a draw twice as well. Their biggest home wins were on their fixtures against Torino and Udinese, both resulted in a 2-0 clean sheet. To compare, their biggest home defeat was the one against Juventus, 1-4.

Raul Albiol’s late rally saved the frustrating Napoli from losing all the points in their most recent Serie A fixture, and instead, shared the spoils with struggling Chievo. An awful miss from Gonzalo Higuain became the premonition of Partenopei’s unsatisfying pitch display, with Dries Mertens particularly reckless at the Stadio San Paolo. Many chances should have been successfully converted, but the players’ carelessness almost put them in a dire situation. If not for defender Raul Albiol’s late goal, Napoli could have been pinned to their fourth upset this season. The draw, however, was much more frustrating for Chievo, who have yet to score a victory this 2014.

Present standings still place Napoli at number three, three points clear of Fiorentina but 12 points behind table toppers Juventus.

Online betting tip: Napoli might have been wasteful in their latest battle but their determination to win their tourneys remains very robust. With inconsistent Atalanta as their next opponents, Napoli are on their way to redeeming themselves. Expect this battle to end with the visitors winning all the marbles.
