Hamburg SV finished the season almost at the rock bottom. They were nearly relegated (for the very first time in their history) had they not been able to win the Bundesliga relegation play-offs against SpVgg Greuther Furth on away goals. In a nutshell, Die Rothosen struggled throughout the tournament and were among the least impressive sides in the top-tier competition. They incurred their worst results in years from this season.

Hamburg opened their campaign as one of the sports betting favorites when they landed on the table’s top eight after they held Schalke 04 on a high-scoring draw 3-3. However, they soon failed to earn points and had to settle on a single spoil following back-to-back defeats from Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin. Their first victory came on week four when they earned four goals and pulled off a clean sheet against Eintracht Braunschweig. Overall, they obtained seven wins, six draws, and 21 defeats which gave them only 27 points from 34 matches. They were similarly unsuccessful at the DFB-Pokal, where they only reached the first round after being eliminated by Hannover 96.

Five new players were added to Hamburg during the summer transfer window, which included Johan Djourou, Lasse Sobiech, Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Kerem Demirbay, and Jacques Zoua. Meanwhile, five players (Dennis Aogo, Marcus Berg, Jacopo Sala, Per Ciljan Skjelbred, and Son Heung-Min) left the side for other clubs and one (Paul Scharner) retired. Team captain Rafael van der Vaart was the side’s top scorer with seven league goals under his belt. He was followed by midfielder Maximilian Beister with five.

Due to Hamburg’s poor streak for more than half of the season, coach Bert van Marwijk was sacked from the managerial post and was replaced by Mirko Slomka. The new manager’s debut fixture with the team finished in a 3–0 win over Borussia Dortmund and managed to pull off two more victories in their subsequent battles. However, he failed to earn at least one win in the last five matches of their Bundesliga campaign.
